Southern Gospel is truly an American
style of music. Many have debated the fact, due to the different
influences. But truly by the definition of American being a melting
pot of cultures, Southern Gospel is at the very center of the
melting pot.

The one thing we all have in
common is we believe in something, and we all have some kind of
faith. When we combine different ways of singing about our faith, we
a create connection that is stronger any other. To explain the roots
of southern gospel, you have to look at all the influences. Some of
these influences helped create the original quartet, and some have
since impacted the genre.
One of the biggest influences on Southern Gospel, is indeed it's
roots in African-American music. The roots go back farther than the
turn of the century, they extend to over 400 years ago. The
"tribal African music" from over 400 years ago, were the
first origins of Southern Gospel and even Gospel Music. No other
culture is associated with Gospel Music more than the African
culture. It "differed from "European and white American
music in one major regard: secular music did not exist in African
traditions. Besides sacred music, Europeans sang about love, war,
and drinking, as well as the recent historical events of nearby
villages, or far off countries. While many of these songs mentioned
God in some manner, many still remained secular and popular among
the village and country folk.
